Details are thin on the ground at this point – as are images – but it seems that Transformers: Dark of the Moon will getting the (let’s face it, inevitable) tie-in treatment with a launch date of ’Summer 2011′ announced.

Developed by High Moon Studios, creators of the pretty decent Transformers: War for Cybertron, the most recent of Transformers titles there’s every reason to hope that this won’t be ‘just another movie tie-in. However, the fact that War for Cybertron didn’t have to coinincide with a movie release may go some way to explaining why it was better than most recent Transformer efforts.

Word is the game will feature something called the ‘Stealth Force’ conversion mode which will apparently let you transform into a “ third, hybrid state that combines the weapons and firepower of robot mode with the agility and manoeuvrability of vehicle mode.” I’m not quite sure what that means but if you do be sure to let us know.

Set in unique environments around the world, such as the Jungles of South America, Siberian military facilities, Detroit cityscapes and more, the game lets players assume the roles of a diverse roster of everyone’s favourite Transformers. Additionally, fans can play the game with or against their friends through intense, online multiplayer game modes as their favourite iconic characters.

Apparently all you Transformers fans will be able to look forward to an all-original plotline which actually serves as a prologue to the film’s events so at least there’s a point to proceedings; here’s hoping both game and film will be an improvment on the fairly awful Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Expect it to hit Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS and yes, 3DS this summer; when we know more we’ll bring it to you.
